INSIGHT #1 and #2

The initial portfolio of images made while losing my central vision.

INSIGHT 1 & 2 covers

By 2020, I could no longer see where the pencil meets the paper and could no longer draw or paint accurately, a talent that had been central to my work. Only the very center of my sight was a cloudy blur. Peripheral vision was good. I felt confident. It was time to find a new approach to making art, one that was not restricted because of my progressive macular degeneration.

(You can read more about that here in my blog.)

My first efforts were 11″ x17″ prints; a combination of free verse and past paintings or photos. I bound them in a softcover volume. Five months later, I republished it with additional explorations. I was Inspired by Walt Whitman, who published ten editions of Leaves of Grass in his lifetime, I set out  to do something similar with INSIGHT.   I would just  keep adding to my efforts with a new edition once or twice a year. That changed when I switched to a larger format in INSIGHT 3: LEMONADE.

Below is a gallery of a third of my first explorations.

 All art is overcoming challenge.

In late 2023, inspired by William Blake, I returned to these prints and began experimenting with short videos to make my work more accessible to the visually impaired community. Below is a video gallery of these shorts.

In 2024, I was approached by Alkeus Pharmaceuticals. They are doing clinical trials for a drug to combat Stargardts and wanted to exhibit my work on their walls. They chose five of my INSIGHT 2 prints. I printed each as an edition of five. Below is a video of me completing them and pondering some possibilities for 2025.
