Up In Smoke
—May 2005
I got an email from friend and great satirist, Steve Brodner, asking
me if I could illustrate a Bush/Nero image for a page in The Nation
that he art directs called "Comics Nation". I agreed of course
and asked Steve if he was OK if i experimented with technique on this
one. He gave me his blessing and I went to work using red conte, charcoal,
and acrylic washes. I had just seen a fabulous Rubens drawing exhibition
and he had this wonderful way of using the red chalk for the nose and
lips. I thought that technique might work for this Bush portrait.
